Dear Parallels Author

First: please enjoy yourself! I really feel like the best fictions are those that the author enjoyed writing. I'm going to give a number of possible prompts, and I'm hoping you'll find something that lets you take off. If not ... well, you can look at some of my bookmarks on AO3, and see whether that inspires any other ideas.

I Don't Like:

  • Characters acting OOC, especially if the purpose is to force them into a relationship (doubly bad if that relationship is romantic or sexual)
  • Romantic/sexual relationships between partners of very uneven levels of power (adult/child, master/servant) - only a couple of writers have ever managed this without squicking me out.
  • By-the-numbers, every-action-described explicit sex (first they do this, then they do that, then ...). Note that actual sex is fine - I just don't like it when the descriptions turn into a set of exact stage directions.
  • Mpreg
  • Sweet girlish stuff with no edge (most romance-focused fiction/shoujo manga leave me cold)
  • Extensive use of epithets, or epithets that don't match the character POV (no one should think of his or her long-time lover as "the green-eyed man," for example): these will throw me right out of a story

I Like:

  • Friendships - although I am a romantic sort of person, not every relationship has to be romantic (I do like the trope of friends becoming lovers, however)
  • Strong characterization (including character-appropriate dialog: no earthy, uneducated characters using $50 words)
  • Wry and even dark humor in the course of a more serious story
  • Positive emotional payoffs that are well-earned
  • Passions that are strong without being mushy/fluffy
  • Moments of realization - satori
  • And I like any of the following "cool bits":
    • hurt-comfort
    • being cozy indoors when it's rainy or snowing
    • senses of smell and touch and memories attached to them
    • impulsive acts of valor (especially on behalf of the weak or an underdog)
    • someone's profile silhouetted against the light
    • opposites attracting
    • romantic partners who are both competent
    • water running over pebbles or stones
    • old-fashioned sections of town with narrow streets and alleyways and odd shops
    • kissing the inside of the elbow or the base of the throat
    • finding in a fight that one's ally feels like a protective wall
    • drops of water clinging to hair and/or skin

I'm quite content with both straight and gay relationships. I do tend to ship the canon relationships, unless it's a character who has had no clear relationships shown in the story. I'm not comfortable with sexual relationships shown in children under the age of, say, 14 or so, and even then it's better in context (teens with other teens or in a societal setting where girls expect to marry by 16-18 anyway).

The Characters and Their Stories

This is pretty much what I wrote for the sign-up, but I have refined it a bit.

Black Lagoon

You could tell me about Benny and Jane's first time (who made the first move?), or Benny's starting to wonder whether this is a good idea after all. What about that strange little household that Shenhua, Sawyer, and Rotton have set up? What have they actually got going on? And of course, Revy's and Rock's relationship is fascinating. Will Revy ever tell him explicitly what she meant when she was telling him that they should have "some sort of a ritual" before their next dangerous mission? How would he react?

Finally, I love Eda, and she doesn't get enough love. Eda/Dutch, Eda/Balalaika, Eda/Chang ... how would any of that play out? Or Eda and Revy have to help each other escape from something, complete with lots of snark and banter. Or some kind of interaction between Eda and Yolanda: when they first decide to work together, or when Eda has some kind of a moment of angst, or maybe Yolanda, horrifyingly, has some sort of a health issue and Eda has to deal with it.

Perhaps a snatched moment with Heine and Badou and their "not a relationship": PWP is fine, but so is some terse introspection about their situation.

I also like Mihai, and either something tender with Kiri, when he's first starting to let himself love again, or a conversation/interaction with Badou (perhaps when they're on that long run back from the incident with the orchestra in the opera house).

A flashback between Badou and his brother would be great too, or perhaps something where Badou first meets Mimi.

For Bishop, how about a piece of his past? How did he end up working at that church? What are his feelings regarding his little flock?

Granny Liza: Some backstory - perhaps the first time she meets any of the characters.

Naoto: She is so opaque! Perhaps her feelings during or just after any of the significant events of the series. When she leaves Fuyumine? When she first encounters Heine? Most recently, after she encounters first Magatsu and then Campanella?

Blade of the Immortal

I've always wanted something hot and/or tender (in the near wordless way that this happens with two tough characters) between Hyakurin and Giichi. Likewise, a missing scene with Doa and Isaku, where they acknowledge their feelings for each other. Doa's conversation with Rin when they part after the prison arc made it clear that Doa considers herself married to Isaku.

Finally, it seems that Tanpopo and Meguro encountered Ryo Soma a couple of times at least. She is in so many ways their opposite: she has that earnest idealism going, and they are very frivolous and humorous. A scene between them, where they end up in accord about something, would be dynamite. Or even just a flashback to Tanpopo's and Meguro's first mission together, or even back when they were first in training as kunoichi, would also be fun.

And if you want to go to town with Manji and Rin ... I love them too, so if that's what inspires you, have at it! (See if you can involve some of my "cool bits," in that case, 'K?)

Wild Adapter

I always love me some Kubota-Tokito interaction, including (of course) the point at which they finally get past their issues and do something physical with each other. Yes, I know I write that myself, but it would be nice to have someone else do it too! I also have a hankering for some interaction between Kasai and Dr. Kou. It can be just some prickly fencing around the issue of the boys and what Kou's been having them do, or it could develop into something more. Finally, I like Takizawa and Anna as well, so any sort of an encounter or side story (more-or-less present timeline) involving either or both them would be great too, as long as our boys are in it.

Ichigenme ... the First Class Is Civil Law

Mostly I want Tamiya Kensuke and Tohdou Taka-aki together. A passionate physical encounter would be great, but anything that shows any of the strengths of their relationship in a way or in a setting in which we have not seen them before would be good too. Having any of the other characters show up in supporting roles would be great. Another possibility would be a flashback discussion between the Tohdou brothers in which they first discuss the fact that they are both gay, and what that will mean given their family.

In the last volume, we see how Watanuki is slipping further and further away from our physical world. I'd like something where one or more of his friends try to counter this. This could range from smexy stuff with Doumeki to some sort of fantasy quest adventure for Kohane and/or Himawari, perhaps involving some of the spirits from the series. (A crossover that somehow involves Kakei and Saiga from Legal Drug/Drug and Drop would not go amiss, either!)
