Smoke and Mirrors (ficlet; Saiyuki)

Title: Smoke and Mirrors
Author: opalmatrix
Warnings: Innuendo, crude talk
Rating: PG-13
Pairing(s): Hakkai/Gojyo

Notes: shortfic written for jinxaire. Prompt: Gojyo and Hakkai, smoke and mirrors. Un beta-ed.
Summary: Gojyo has a big mouth and sharp eyes.

The towel was not large, and it was perilously low on Gojyo's hips. This might have something to do with the remains of a nasty gash along the top of the left hip - but perhaps not. Hakkai's eyes were drawn unstoppably to the line of dark hair than ran down from his friend's navel to vanish under the damp toweling. Gojyo grinned and batted his long eyelashes as he took the clean boxers that Hakkai was offering him.

Hakkai hastily turned back to the clean wash he was folding on top of the dresser. At the edges of his vision he could see Gojyo carelessly tossing the towel over the back of the wooden chair in the corner of the room and stepping into the clean shorts, offering a momentary reflected glimpse of his firm arse. Hakkai dropped his eyes to the socks he was matching.

"I knew a natural redhead once," said Gojyo, casually, and Hakkai heard the snick of his lighter. Could the tobacco smoke be smelled already, or was Hakkai just imagining it in response to the sound?

"Her hair - you know, underneath, I mean - it was only sorta brown."

"You don't say," said Hakkai, flatly, watching Gojyo's lazy grin in the mirror, how his lips curled and puckered to draw on the cigarette, how they pursed and opened just so to blow the smoke out as he took the cigarette away. Hakkai thought his own bland expression, also reflected, was quite good, given the circumstances. He laid the rolled pairs of socks carefully in rows on the dresser top. One, two, three, four, five pairs.

Gojyo sat on the bed and flicked ashes into the ugly glass ashtray on the rickety little table. He stuck the cigarette between his lips again. The smoked curled from its end, twisting as it rose. "Under her arms, too. She wasn't one of those prissy girls who shave everything."

Hakkai stared down at the dresser. "Gojyo. You're missing a pair of socks."

There was a brief silence. Gojyo sucked on the end of his smoke and flicked his crimson eyes briefly toward the cracked glass in front of Hakkai.

"Eh, who cares?"

"I do."

"What, about the socks?"

"Yes, the socks" said Hakkai, tightly. "What else could I mean?" He looked up again and met Gojyo's sheepish but knowing grin in the mirror.

"You ain't foolin' anyone. Sorry about that, man."

Hakkai gave up and turned to face him. "Gojyo. Not everything that comes into your head has to come out of your mouth. And how many times have I told you: no smoking in bed."

"Too many. Guess I'm in trouble, right?" Gojyo put out the cigarette, lay back on the bed, and licked his lips, looking slyly at his lover.

"You have no idea," Hakkai told him sternly, and reached to turn out the light.

Oooh, I like this, especially Gojyo's teasing and Hakkai's poor attempt at hiding his thoughts. Very nice job showing the push and pull of their personalities with this little fic. Thank you, Cho!
